Redactada en una época en que los escritores del continente sentían una poderosa atracción por la naturaleza en sus aspectos más pintorescos y primitivos, la novela de Rivera se destaca por el fragor de su prosa, intensa, agitada, nerviosa, siempre a punto de desbordarse como los ríos que nos describe o el follaje que cubre ese mundo infernal en el que se internan Arturo Cova y sus amigos huyendo de la sociedad. Los diversos elementos de romanticismo, modernismo y "telurismo" que contiene se mezclan de manera admirable y dan como resultado la más expresiva síntesis del trágico enfrentamiento del hombre con una naturaleza salvaje y devoradora, tema característico de la narrativa de la época en que Rivera produjo esta rara joya de las letras colombianas. |
