"Aunque sólo obtuvo una mención honorífica en el Premio Literario Esso de 1961, Respirando el verano, de Héctor Rojas Herazo, constituyó un hito en la novelística colombiana desde el momento de su aparición en 1962, como una obra polémica que suscitó elogios encendidos de los vanguardistas y ataques inclementes de los tradicionalistas. Hoy, Respirando el verano ha sido calibrada en su auténtica dimensión como una novela en la que "afloran rápidos matices del problema del mal: la muerte, la incomunicación, la soledad, la compasión y la inutilidad del vivir", según el crítico jesuita William Héctor Mejía. Rojas Herazo, con su estilo impecable, crea ambientes y personajes de corte faulkneriano sin perder la esencia local que los hace universales". |
